Fuerteventura Football – For The Fans!
I’m back in Fuerteventura on holiday for a few days and I was at a match in El Cotillo yesterday to watch the local team play, I am now a committed supporter of the sky blue team.
El Cotillo are the leading team in Fuerteventura and are in the Canary Island League, which is about the third division of Spanish football and they are great to watch.
El Cotillo are currently mid table and yesterday faced C.D. Mensajero from Gran Canaria who are in third place in the league. I got great value for my fiver entrance charge.
The first half saw all chances go to the visitors but our goalkeeper kept us in the game and it remained nil all at half time. We had the wind on our back in the first half and so I was a bit worried that Mensajero would destroy us when they had the wind in their favour.

But guess what, we scored a goal against the run of play, 15 minutes into the second half and that changed the match. It was tough and we were under pressure for the entire second half and there was an almost expectation amongst the supporters that we would not hold on. The referee was very busy and gave 9 yellow cards in the second half, the benches were emptied and we struggled to hold on…but in the 4th minute of extra time we got a great goal to end the contest. Yippee , Go Cotillo. You can view the El Cotillo scores here. This was my second game of the year and I’m finding that it’s becoming part of the routine when in Fuerteventura on holiday. The stadium is only minutes from our apartments in Fuerteventura and for 5 euro it is great value.
For those who are on long term holidays in Fuerteventura attending a game could also be a great way to meet some ex pats who will help show you to the nearest watering hold should you be lost. It’s a nice island like that.
As I’m in Fuerteventura for a short holiday expect to see more blog posts soon so stay tuned. G.
